چکیده

Using QM-Sutton-Chen many-body potential, we have studied the 1⁄2a<110> screw dislocation in nickel (Ni) via Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. We have studied core energy and structure using a quadrupolar dislocation system with 3-D periodic boundary conditions. The relaxed structures show dissociation into two partials on {111} planes. The equilibrium separation distance between the two partials is 2.5 nm, which is larger than the derived value according to experimental data, due to low stacking fault energy given by the QM-Sutton-Chen force field. From our calculations the core energy for the 1⁄2a<110> screw dislocation is 0.5 eV/b. We also studied motion and annihilation process of opposite signed dislocations. We build the dipole system with two combinations of dissociation planes: a) two dislocations dissociated on intersecting slip planes and b) two on parallel planes. The process of cross slip and associated energy barriers are also calculated from these simulations.

CALTECH ASCI TECHNICAL REPORT 115 cit-asci-tr115 Accurate Calculations of the Peierls Stress in Small Periodic Cells

The Peierls stress for a [111]-screw dislocation in bcc Tantalum is calculated using an embedded atom potential. More importantly, a method is presented which allows accurate calculations of the Peierls stress in the smallest periodic cells. This method can be easily applied to ab initio calculations, where only the smallest unit cells capable of containing a dislocation can be conviently used....

Using molecular dynamics with an accurate many-body potential for metallic Tantalum, we studied crack propagation in a pre-notched nano-slab under uniaxial strain in a [100] direction. We study dislocation emission from the crack tip for various strain rate and temperatures and focus on the inuence of the local temperature at the crack tip on the nature of the crack propagation We nd a close co...

CALTECH ASCI TECHNICAL REPORT 169 A nonstiff additive semi-implicit Runge-Kutta scheme for finite-rate reacting flows

A nonstiff additive semi-implicit third-order Runge-Kutta scheme suitable for integration of convection-diffusion-reaction equations with few diffusion dominated species is presented in this article. This scheme permits larger time steps than those required by explicit schemes and uses only one implicit stage and two explicit stages. The stability domain is analyzed and tests are carried out fo...

CALTECH ASCI TECHNICAL REPORT 120 cit-asci-tr120 Kinks in a/2<111> Screw Dislocation in Ta

We study the structure and formation energy of kinks in 1/2a<111> screw dislocations in metallic Tantalum using molecular dynamics with a first principles based many-body interatomic potential. In our study, four a/3<112> kinks are in a quadrupole arrangement in the simulation cell. We impose periodic boundary conditions in the directions perpendicular to [111] and fixed boundaries in the [111]...

CALTECH ASCI TECHNICAL REPORT 111 cit-asci-tr111 Thermal condicutivity of diamond and related materials from molecular dynamics simulations

Based on the Green–Kubo relation from linear response theory, we calculated the thermal current autocorrelation functions from classical molecular dynamics ͑MD͒ simulations. We examined the role of quantum corrections to the classical thermal conduction and concluded that these effects are small for fairly harmonic systems such as diamond. We then used the classical MD to extract thermal conducti...

CALTECH ASCI TECHNICAL REPORT 116 cit-asci-tr116 Reply to "Comment on 'The Phase Diagram of MgO from Density Functional Theory and Molecular Dynamics Simulations' "

In answer to a Comment by Belonoshko [Phys. Rev. B (to be published)], we show that the B1-liquid melting curve of MgO obtained using two-phase simulations is in good agreement with the published one obtained using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation in conjunction with separate single phase calculations of liquid and solid. The main point of the Comment by Belonoshko [1] regards the calculation of...
